Abel Tasman National Park is found in the Tasman district located at the top of the South Island. While the area is renowned for its golden beaches and laid-back atmosphere, the Abel Tasman Coast Track is by far one of its biggest drawcards. The track is popular with hikers accessing the track on foot but is also popular for those arriving by kayak or water taxi.

Awaroa Beach made headlines in 2016 when it was effectively bought by New Zealanders and saved from private ownership. When Awaroa came up for sale, a group of locals were concerned a private owner may end up shutting off the spectacular beach to public access. A crowdfunding campaign was set up, and New Zealanders donated two million dollars to save the beach and give it back to national park.
