Mt Alfred is found just beyond the township of Glenorchy at the head of Lake Whakatipu. Glenorchy is a 45-minute drive from Queenstown, and the road journey from between the towns is regarded as one of the most beautiful in the country.
At 1,375 metres high, Mt Alfred is a popular hike and with views in every direction, including across Mt Aspiring National Park and into the Southern Alps, it is a hike well worth the effort. Thanks to its almost perfect pyramid shape, Mt Alfred is an iconic sight on the Dart Valley landscape. The braided Rees and Dart rivers flow either side of the hill, their icy waters sourced from high in the Southern Alps.
