The Haast region is found on the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island. The area is surrounded by national parks and is popular for hikers, hunters and jet boaters looking to tackle the narrow, braided rivers that stretch from the rainforest to the wild coast.
Haast is located within Te Wāhipounamu World Heritage Area, an area awarded UNESCO World Heritage status in 1990. The journey to Haast takes you from the Southern Lakes to the West Coast along State Highway 6 and is renowned as one of New Zealand’s most spectacular drives. A highlight along the way is the Gates of Haast, a popular spot for photo stops. The Gates of Haast is one of the steepest and narrowest points of the Haast River, and here immense boulders litter the river gorge as the river crashes its way down the hillside to make a powerful and impressive sight.
