Castle Hill showcases the unique landscape of Arthur’s Pass, two hours out of Christchurch. Captured with the rarely-used 200mm lens, Stephan frames the early morning sunshine as it lights up the distinctive limestone rock formations of Castle Hill. From the tussock-covered hillside and plateaus, the jagged limestone emerges and creates a dramatic contrast. Stephan’s precise technique and eye for detail bring this rugged landscape to life.

Castle Hill, located in the Kura Tawhiti Conservation Area of New Zealand, is a striking geological feature situated approximately 90 kilometres from Christchurch between Darfield and Arthur’s Pass. This area is renowned for its dramatic limestone formations, which have been shaped over millions of years through erosion and geological activity, creating a unique karst landscape characterised by boulders and rock outcrops.
The area is framed by the Southern Alps, with the Torlesse Range to the east and the Craigieburn Range to the west, providing a stunning backdrop for visitors. The area attracts outdoor enthusiasts year-round and is particularly popular for rock climbing and bouldering.
