Geography

Cleddau River

The Cleddau River is located in the Cleddau Valley in Fiordland National Park. Fiordland National Park occupies 1.2 million hectares in the southwest corner of the South Island. Together with Mt Aspiring National Park and Westland National Park, it makes up the larger Te Wahipounamu South West New Zealand World Heritage area. Te Wahipounamu (the place of Greenstone) is 2.6 million hectares of land, safely protected thanks to its World Heritage status.

The Cleddau Valley is considered one of the highlights of the journey to Milford Sound along the breathtaking Milford road. For many, the drive to Piopiotahi/Milford Sound is just as spectacular as the arrival. You will cross a wider section of the Cleddau River during your journey to Milford Sound.
