The Donne River is found in Fiordland National Park in the southwest of the South Island. The river flows southwest to join the Cleddau River before eventually flowing into the world-famous Milford Sound. Visitors driving to Milford Sound will cross the Donne River after passing through the Homer Tunnel.
The Homer Tunnel is a 1.2-kilometre tunnel cut through the solid granite rock of the Darran Mountains. Built in 1954 and taking nearly 20 years to complete, the construction of the Homer Tunnel through the solid rock was an impressive feat of engineering for its time.
