Duffers Saddle is the highest mountain pass accessible by public road in New Zealand, reaching an altitude of 1,300 metres. It is located within the Nevis Valley, not far from Garston in Central Otago on the South Island. It is a region renowned for its striking schist rock tors and dramatic tussock-covered hills. The Nevis Road is a popular 4WD track, offering beautiful scenery, river crossings and relics of past gold mining activities.
The valley is enveloped by several mountain ranges, including the Remarkable Mountains and Old Woman Range. Nevis Valley is also home to high country farms, such as Ben Nevis Station and Craig Roy Station, covering about 20,000 acres, primarily in livestock farming. Recreational activities abound, from four-wheel driving and hiking to fishing in the cold waters of the Nevis River, making it a much-loved destination for outdoor lovers and history buffs alike.
