Graham Saddle

Close to New Zealand’s most famous peak, Aoraki/Mt Cook, Graham Saddle connects the vast Chamberlin Snowfield with The Minarets. Seemingly endless layers of saddles and peaks are the hallmark of the Southern Alps, and it is only when seen from the air can we get a sense of just how vast it is.

Geography

Graham Saddle

The Graham Saddle sits above the immense Chamberlin Snowfield, which feeds one of the Southern Alps’ most famous glaciers, Franz Josef Glacier. The Southern Alps span almost the entire length of the South Island, and Aoraki/Mt Cook and Franz Josef Glacier are two of its most prominent features.

Aoraki/Mt Cook, standing proudly as New Zealand’s highest peak is located in Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park, reaching an impressive elevation of 3,724 meters (12,218 feet). Aoraki/Mt Cook is renowned for its breathtaking beauty, attracting mountaineers, hikers, and nature enthusiasts from around the world. Not far from here lies Franz Josef Glacier, named after Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria. The glacier descends from the Southern Alps and is one of the few glaciers in the world that descends so close to a temperate rainforest.
