Geography

Gulliver River 02

The Gulliver River begins high in the Darren Mountains in Fiordland National Park. The river flows southwest to join the Cleddau River before eventually flowing into the world-famous Piopiotahi/Milford Sound. Visitors driving to Milford Sound will cross the Gulliver River after passing through the Homer Tunnel.

The Homer Tunnel is a 1.2-kilometre tunnel cut through the solid granite rock of the Darran Mountains. Built in 1954 and taking nearly 20 years to complete, the construction of the Homer Tunnel through the solid rock was an impressive feat of engineering for its time.
