Hooker Lake is accessible from Mount Cook Village, situated just south of New Zealand’s highest peak, Aoraki/Mt Cook (3,724m). The popular walk will take you over a number of swing bridges along the Hooker River. Hooker Lake formed as a result of the retreating Hooker Glacier—it is common to see icebergs in the lake, broken off from the shrinking glacier above.
There are just over 170 glaciers in Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park, making it a popular location for mountaineers. However, it is also popular for gentler pursuits, such as exploring the stunning turquoise waters of Lake Pukaki and Lake Tekapo, the many braided rivers, and friendly towns.
