Hooker River

Morning light bathes Mount Sefton’s face in golden alpenglow while the Hooker River flows beneath in cool, aqua blue. Using a long exposure technique, Stephan has captured the mesmerising dance of water over ancient glacial rocks, creating a striking contrast between movement and permanent alpine grandeur. The composition draws the viewer’s eye from the rushing waters in the foreground to the mighty peaks of the Hooker Valley.

Geography

Hooker River

The Hooker Valley, situated in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, is one of New Zealand’s most spectacular alpine environments. The Hooker River, fed by the terminal lake of the Hooker Glacier, carries glacial meltwater through this remarkable valley. The river’s journey begins at the foot of Aoraki/Mount Cook and winds its way past some of New Zealand’s most impressive peaks, including Mount Sefton and The Footstool.

The area is accessible via the famous Hooker Valley Track, one of New Zealand’s most popular day hikes. This trail offers visitors three swing bridge crossings over the Hooker River, and attracts visitors from around the world to experience this area of raw beauty.
