Kahikatea

Old kahikatea trees stand on the shores of Lake Wahapo on the West Coast. The silhouettes of these trees—which once covered the entire area—create a serene reflection on the still water of the lake, and a compelling contrast to the light of a new day dawning.

Geography

Kahikatea

Located in the Westland region of New Zealand, Lake Wahapo is a picturesque body of water surrounded by a stand of kahikatea trees and flax. The area was once heavily logged for the valuable timber of the kahikatea trees.

The distinctive horseshoe shape of Lake Paringa is a reminder of an ancient glacier that once scraped its way through the landscape. Today, the lake is one of the West Coast’s natural scenic highlights offering a wealth of birdlife. The lake itself is popular with anglers. Lake Wahapo is located 16 kilometres north of Franz Josef.
