Captured on a serene winter morning, Lake Matheson Reflection presents a fresh view of the renowned West Coast lake, from a vantage point that gazes into the surrounding forest, creating a more dramatic, moody reflection. The calm water and gentle light blend to mirror the mountains and sky into a harmonious, symmetrical scene, and a peaceful moment just off the beaten path.

Lake Matheson is one of the South Island’s most photographed lakes, tucked within Westland Tai Poutini National Park near the township of Fox Glacier. On a still day, its dark, tannin-stained waters create near-perfect reflections of Aoraki/Mt Cook and Mount Tasman, best known from the lake’s famous “View of Views.”
A well-formed walking track loops around the lake through native rainforest, taking around 1.5 to 2 hours to complete. Along the way, two viewing platforms offer the classic postcard view back toward the mountains, while the rest of the track winds through dense podocarp forest, home to a rich variety of native birdlife.
