South Mavora and North Mavora lakes are located a 30-minute drive off State Highway 94 near Mossburn in the Southland district. The area is a popular camping and recreation spot for locals as well as those visiting from outside of the Southland area. Mavora Lakes is set amongst an impressive landscape ranging from immense mountains to tussock grasslands and the forest floor. North Mavora and South Mavora lakes are linked by the Mararoa River, which flows between the two lakes.
The area is a much-loved recreation area for Southlanders. It is a national park, yet many activities like boating, 4WDing and hunting are allowed within the conservation area. There are many walks in the area, from short lake tracks to longer hikes like Mavora-Greenstone Walkway that links the Mavora camping area with the Greenstone Track.
