Lake Whakatipu is a large glacially-formed lake in Otago in the southwest of New Zealand’s South Island. The popular tourist town of Queenstown is the main city closest to Lake Whakatipu and is home to a permanent population of just over 15,000 people.
Around 12,000 years ago, a huge glacier flowed from the head of the lake, near the Dart and Rees valley. As the glacier moved through the area, it carved out a large trough forming what is now the lake bed.
Lake Whakatipu offers many ways to get out on the water and enjoy the view, but many have discovered that one of the best ways to enjoy the lake is from the town centre at sunset. The shadows and colours play against the silhouettes of the mountains in the distance, creating a sight you will never forget.
