Lochnagar

From the helicopter’s vantage point, the serene waters of Lochnagar are revealed in full alpine splendour. On a still day, the alpine lake reflects a perfect mirror image and symmetry with the Richardson Mountains beyond. Golden tussocks frame the deep blue waters. The aerial perspective shows the scale of this remote and rarely visited alpine environment.

Geography

Lochnagar

The alpine lake, Lochnagar, sits within Mount Aspiring National Park, one of New Zealand’s most pristine wilderness areas. The lake, formed by an immense landslide nearly one thousand years ago, is difficult to access, making it one of Central Otago’s more remote lakes. Its Scottish name reflects the area’s historical connection to early settlers who were reminded of their homeland’s Highland landscapes.
