Geography

Maniototo

Falls Dam is located 15 minutes from St Bathans, the quaint and historic gold mining town in Central Otago. Falls Dam is one of many irrigation dams constructed throughout The Maniototo to collect and store water throughout the year that is then used for irrigation during the dry summer months.

Built around 80 years ago, Falls Dam feeds the Manuherikia River. The entire Maniototo Plain area is popular for hikers, anglers and, of course, photographers. The Hawkdun Range and Oteake Conservation Park form an impressive backdrop for visitors to the area. Nearby townships of Middlemarch, Ranfurly and Naseby form part of the Central Otago Rail Trail as well as being popular for day-trippers.
