Mt Cook Milky Way

Aoraki/Mt Cook, New Zealand’s highest peak at 3,724 meters, is centrally located within the Southern Alps of the South Island and anchors the Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park, a sprawling protected area that spans over 700 square kilometres.

This geographical marvel is characterised by its rugged silhouette and array of glaciers, rock formations, and snow-covered summits. The national park is situated midway between Christchurch and Queenstown, accessible within a four-hour drive from Christchurch to the north or a three-hour drive from Queenstown to the south. Aoraki/Mt Cook not only plays a significant role in the country’s natural scenery but also holds deep cultural importance for local iwi Ngai Tahu for whom the mountain represents a profound connection to the land.
