Rangitata

From the vantage point of a nearby peak, Stephan makes the most of a fleeting moment of sun breaking through the clouds above the Rangitata River in the Canterbury Plains. Light illuminates the vibrant green in the foreground, and a dramatic contrast between the Two Thumbs Range in the distance and the moody sky above is revealed. Rangitata was achieved by stitching six individual images together to create one panorama piece.

Geography

Rangitata

The Rangitata River is a large braided river in the South Island of New Zealand, flowing southeast for 120 kilometres from the Southern Alps to the Pacific Ocean. It plays a crucial role in shaping the Canterbury Plains, one of New Zealand’s most significant areas of flat land. The river originates from the confluence of the Clyde and Havelock Rivers in the Southern Alps.

As it descends, it passes through the Rangitata Gorge in the alpine foothills before spreading across the Canterbury Plains. On the plains, the river typically flows in shallow, braided channels, making it popular for fishing. The Rangitata’s course has helped form the expansive and fertile Canterbury Plains.
