Geography

Rees River

The Rees Valley, located in Mount Aspiring National Park near Glenorchy, extends from the Southern Alps to the head of Lake Wakatipu. This spectacular valley, carved by ancient glaciers, serves as a gateway to some of New Zealand’s most pristine alpine environments. The valley takes its name from the Rees River, which winds through the landscape before emptying into Lake Wakatipu.

A paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, the Rees Valley is renowned for its fly fishing opportunities, with abundant brown and rainbow trout in its clear waters. The valley forms part of the larger Mount Aspiring National Park, offering access to hiking trails and snow-capped peaks. The area’s rich biodiversity, including native beech forests and alpine herbs, makes it a significant conservation area and iconic New Zealand landmark.
