Treble Cone

From a viewpoint behind Treble Cone, the Matukituki River winds through the valley below, Lake Wānaka shimmering in the distance. The jagged ridgeline of Treble Cone dominates the foreground—raw, angular, and impossibly beautiful. A mesmerising work, capturing both the scale and solitude of this dramatic alpine area.

Geography

Treble Cone

Treble Cone is a ski area in the South Island and a defining landmark of the Wānaka region. Its steep slopes and rugged terrain were carved by ancient glaciers, leaving behind a dramatic landscape of schist outcrops and deep valleys. The Matukituki River flows from Mt Aspiring National Park before meeting Lake Wānaka, one of New Zealand’s most iconic lakes.

In winter, Treble Cone draws skiers and snowboarders seeking challenging runs and panoramic views, while in summer, the area transforms into a playground for hikers, climbers, and photographers. The nearby Matukituki Valley offers access to Mount Aspiring National Park, renowned for its alpine wilderness. Whether blanketed in snow or basking in summer light, Treble Cone remains a symbol of Otago’s untamed beauty.
