The Remarkables rise above the southeastern shore of Lake Wakatipu, forming a steep, serrated wall that runs roughly north–south behind Queenstown. Its jagged profile is carved from hard schist, with cirques, gullies, and winter snow accenting the ridge. The highest peak in the range is Single Cone, which reaches an elevation of 2,319 metres (7,608 feet).
In winter, the range is home to The Remarkables ski area, while summer brings hikers and photographers onto the tussock benches and high passes. Closer to town, the basins and low hills offer sheltered vantage points like Lake Johnson—compact, quiet, and perfectly placed for mirror-still views of the range at dawn and dusk.
